The Conference

We are holding a two-day meeting to consider the influence that the work of John Crank has had on the numerical solution of time dependent PDEs, on the modelling of diffusive processes and on free boundary problems. The focus of the meeting will be on the state of the art of the subject and on future developments and applications, including industrial applications.

The programme consists of invited talks and poster sessions and covers three themes:

The numerics of time-dependent PDEs; time stepping methods and diffusive equations.
Diffusive models; reaction diffusion equations, chemical materials, non-Fickian diffusion, industrial, biological and social science applications.
Free boundary problems: Stefan problems, industrial and biological applications, finance applications.

Although all the talks will be by invited speakers, we wish to encourage participants to present poster papers in poster sessions during the conference. Anyone wishing to submit a poster paper should follow the instructions below

We organize a School on November 12,13 and 14 in Paris on "Introduction to numerical methods for moving boundaries". Three courses are proposed (level sets, fast marching, graph cuts), and a call for mini-talks is open. These courses are either for students or non specialist researchers. We present a bibliography on moving and free boundary problems for the heat-diffusion equation, particularly regarding the Stefan and related problems. It contains 5869 titles referring to 588 scientific Journals, 122 books, 88 symposia (having at least 3 contributions on the subject), 30 collections, 59 thesis and 247 technical reports. It tries to give a comprehensive account of the western existing mathematical-physical-engineering literature on this research field.

The scientific colloquium of CTU organized by the Department of Mathematics, FNSPE CTU in Prague and by the Mathematical Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences is devoted to the meeting of applied mathematicians dealing with theory and numerical solution of partial differential equations, mathematical modelling and numerical simulation of problems in technology, environment, biology and computer science. The meeting is being prepared as a satellite workshop of the international conference EQUADIFF 11 held in Bratislava.

The 2005 EMS Lecturer is Professor Nina Uraltseva (head of Mathematical Physics in St. Petersburg State University, St. Petersburg, Russia). She visits Portugal to give a series of lectures on Regularity of free boundaries in parabolic obstacle problems. The lectures will take place in

FBP2005 is the 10th Conference on Free Boundary Problems of the series started in 1981 in Italy and it continues to be an important catalyst for the identification and development of this interdisciplinary mathematical field. It will take place between the 7th and the 12th of June, in the University of Coimbra, Portugal. The Centre for Mathematics of the University of Coimbra (CMUC)
accepts applications for one-year postdoctoral positions in
all areas of Mathematics. CMUC has been recently classified as
a research unit of excellence by an international funding panel.
